Competition success for NCUC photography student

Congratulations to Caitlin Orridge, currently in the final year of a BA (Hons) Photography degree at Newcastle College University Centre, whose work has recently been exhibited at the Centre for Creative Photography in Jyväskylä, Finland.

The Mobile@Nordic2022 exhibition featured a selection of winning photographs from the Nordic competition 2022, which allowed entrants to submit as many photos as they liked, in any style. There was only one condition - all photos had to be taken on a phone.

Caitlin explained: “My tutors at college always tell us about competitions to help us get our work out there. I was doing a photoshoot for my photography portfolio anyway, so I just kept switching over to my phone to create this series of images for the Nordic competition.”

From the 600 images entered into the competition, only 11 entries were selected to be displayed, including Caitlin’s. She says she was over the moon to be included, continuing: “I was speechless as I have never won a photography competition before, let alone had my photos displayed in a gallery… in Finland! It all felt very surreal. I am a very self-critical person, but this has reassured me that pursuing photography was the right choice for me.”

Head of Curriculum for Digital Arts, Graham Stouph, added: “It was great that one of our HE students had their image chosen for the international exhibition. It was even better that Caitlin and some of her class friends could visit Finland for the opening of the exhibition.”
